I have a site already : http://www.rockhoppers.org.uk/proposed/index.html

does this mean if I want the above site to be editable I'd have to make EACH page a template ?

Can I use my existing menu's ?

I was under the impression that I could just specify which paragraphs / sections of the text I wanted to be editable ... I do not need the whole site editable just a couple of specific sections like the meets list for example ...

however I have installed GS cms onto my server and now am really lost as when I upload my existing pages they do get listed ? only files like swf or js files get listed ?

I cannot find any simple step by step instructions on how to use this ... so i'm guessing this isn't so simple
I think the intention of Get-Simple is to allow a developer to create a site that their client can easily edit when Wordpress is over-kill (small static website, doesn't require a blog).

Yes, this is one way of doing it if you want different content on each page using the default get simple setup, however, you could also use components:
http://get-simple.info/wiki/components-d...n-the_page

http://spritingonawhim.net.tc/articles/g...s/?lang=en
A little article about this issue.

Concrete http://www.concrete5.org/ This is an example of a CMS that works with the edit in place philosophy, however, it is not simple if you want a custom site curtailed to your needs.

http://www.opensourcecms.com/ There are many CMS and no ultimate solution. You need to find one that works for you.

Bottom line: The more you know, they more you can do. If you know HTML/CSS (essential unless you want to pay someone to do it or find someone to do it for free):
1. Create a template or hack up the ones that come w/ Get-Simple, adding your own layout code from your existing site.
2. Create a new page in get simple and Copy and paste the content from your current pages (Some may require tweaks) into the editor. Considering a WYSIWYG editor has its benefits and drawbacks depending on the complexity of the content being displayed. You could copy and paste the html into the editor and use custom styles.

http://get-simple.info/extend/plugin/i18n/69/
http://getsimple.wujitsu.pl/bluebusiness...update-v14
You could use this theme and hack it up to fit your current design. If you install the i18n plugin you can have drop downs and hierarchical tree menus if you wish.
Sorry if this post is all over the place but there is no magical wand that I can wave, which will solve all your problems. I can only offer suggestions.

The intention is also to have users without developers using GS as CMS. I know a lot of people who install it, choose a theme and start.

But it takes a little knowledge, for sure,
For that we have a WIKI and in case you are german-savy a german website, explaining nearly everything we could think of in relation to GS: http://www.get-simple.de

there is also a a french site: http://getsimple.fr/

So if you start to get some knowledge before you run into it ;=) you will be able to use it.

Your expectation that you can throw any page into GS and it will work with that is just wrong. That will not work, with no CMS ever. Each system needs some structure. The best would be for you to study the structure of the templates, then you will be able to identify where the content goes
and after that you can create pages and copy the content from your "old" pages into these pages
Hi

Thanks for the quick replies ... much appreciated : )

I was hoping that GetSimple would allow me to take say a paragraph of text from my current site and make just this text editable with GS by enclosing said text within some kind of php GS tags ... that way I wouldn't need to set up the whole site using templates etc but just have certain parts of my site editable.

I will have a look at the plugin options that are available ...

cheers

Mike,

you are looking for something what in my experience is not the purpose of a CMS.
If you switch from old static sites to new dynamic sites, you must transfer the content, no matter which CMS you use.

All of us had to migrate content. All of us had to learn that there are no pigeons flying in our mouth, fried and peppered ;=)

you are always welcome with your questions here. Try to learn the first steps and you will see that GS is simple and comfortable.

Cheers, Connie

How did you create your current site? It seems to have a great deal of css, common menus and internal comments in the html.

Was it created using some form of off-line web site creation software?

There may be a way to migrate it.

I found what you are looking for, try OnePage CMS:

maybe this comes closer to your plans
