Mobile Site - Derek - 2009-08-08

Maybe it's just me getting frustrated with my Blackberry, but if this is a small business site, then a standard mobile version wouldn't be such a bad idea, or that hard to implement. I might start trying that this weekend.

this can easily be done within html. it doesn't need to be integrated into system. Theme system of this CMS is atm deadly simple which makes this CMS really awesome. Please keep it this way

Mobile Site - Derek - 2009-08-08

I know it's easy, I was just thinking it would be a viable 'setting' or something. I know it's easy with HTML, and this templating system is awesome.

Mobile Site - someone - 2009-08-08

I know what you are trying to say but this is exactly what I'm not recommending to do. Soon enough this CMS is gonna get quite a lot of popularity and there will be a LOT of "viable settings" which are unnecessary to the majority of users and you as a developers will have to be able to say no to these features in order to keep this CMS simple and general. My opinion in here is "If it can be done other (and simple enough) way, don't implement it"

We need to keep it simple! But I like the idea.
Mobilephones users are growing so I think this is not to hard to make...

Just make some theme in the theme dir with the name mobile.
And in the main theme you could add something like this:
http://detectmobilebrowsers.mobi/

Not very hard to add in but could be handy

Mobile Site - Derek - 2009-08-08

I know it's easy and could just be done in themes. But not everyone can code it so yeah...I was thinking more about the non tech-savy people

Mobile Site - someone - 2009-08-08

Derek... if person is non tech-savy they probably won't care. But at the same time - this should be targeted at Theme developers (and it would be a good thing to write it to documentation connected with a shor tutorial on how to do it!!!!)

Then you also need to have a more flexible way of handeling the theme: because you need a iphone map - blackberry map etc

I definitely think this should be part of the theme developer's task. No reason to add this to the system for use in themes when many people won't care about it. If they do, then they should choose or create a theme that has this support.

Do it with CSS styling. A good example (from what I can tell) is here: Making a website iPhone-friendly using CSS

(Note that while it is specified for the iPhone, it should give you a good starting point for all mobile styling, as well.)

I believe CSS3 has a mediatype for smartphone browsing, but that's on the horizon; just thought I'd mention it, though. Smile
