Is there a way to quickly and effectively disable the sidebar? I've commented out the code and deleted all of the content, and there's still a sidebar in my theme with nothing in it

The quickest way would be to create a theme without a sidebar. There is no way to “disable†the sidebar on a template that has been designed to have a sidebar other then removing it from the template’s HTML and changing the CSS accordingly.
