And mailchimp is very widely used. I haven't used it but I believe it works with GS. For instance you can make a mailchimp subscription form and paste the code into a GS page.

Yeah mailchimp works on any site. You don't need a plugin for it, although the admin is somewhere else then.
It just seems a bit over the top if you don't need all the features.
