change banner backgroung-image?

Hello everyone, i like this cms and until now I had no problems configuring it.
But now i need to change the banner background wih an image.
i've tried to change it by css and by template.php with

Code:

get_theme_url();

code, but both did't work.

Please someone can help me?

Why not just use relative urls and the custom css plugin.
or are you talking about a theme.
