sitemap.xml gets created inside the root of your website. meaning if your website is domain.com, then it will be domain.com/sitemap.xml
So for the sitemap to be automatically created the first time, your root folder needs to be writable. The alternative way to do it would be to create a blank file in the root of your website called sitemap.xml, and CHMOD it to 755, 766 or 777.
As for the innovation plugin not showing up... why did you "install" it? It is already part of the download meaning that you wouldn't have had to install anything for it to be there.
