Changing the index page (homepage)

I'd love to have an option to make any page the Homepage.
I think it is quite common to prepare a (hidden) page and then, when ready, make it the new homepage.

Alternatively, a "how to" guide for this would be welcome. I tried this and now I can still edit - but not save - my homepage anymore.
