Enforcing child pages?

I notice that URL rewriting doesn't need subpages.

For example mysite.com/parent/child1 can be hit by mysite.com/child1 or even mysite.com/blah/blah/blah/child1.

Is this OK from a SEO perspective? It is my understanding that pages should ideally be accessible from a a single URL.

I know the canonical meta tag is set correctly (always parent/child) - is that adequate?

I think it is. I didn't see the need the run a whole new XML check to verify the parent is correct. There is also a GSCONFIG variable that forces the canonical url...
