moved server problems moving some files
#1
I've just moved a test GS to a public server to allow another person to work on it.
I used the instructions at http://get-simple.info/wiki/installation:migrating

however some files will not move: files in data/user
and files in data/other

permissions have owner as www-data and I get a "You are not the owner, so you cannot change permissions". error.

Do I need to rebuild everything that is missing? or is there an easier solution? my home server is on ubuntu 10.04 I'm using GS3.0

Thanks
Quinn

Quinn,

I do not understand completely what you mean with "not moving"?

did you install at the other server? After that you could delete the data-folder and upload the data-folder from the local installation

I do this mostly that way:
I copy the data folder
open all files in editor (WIN: notepad++) and search/replace old URL by new URL
then I upload the data-folder to the new destination

this always worked at my place ... so what is your problem exactly?
what is the server-health-check saying?

My problem was some of the files from the clean install on the public server had a different owner and would not let an overwrite or be deleted! I used ftp to upload all the clean files but when I tried to overwrite with the populated files they wouldn't copy over because I wasn't the owner!
Looking at the files some files have server ownership! most files are 506 503 but all files in /users/ (xml files) are 99 99 as is index.xml in pages and all files in /other/
had to get the server guys to change ownership, then as soon as I uploaded the files that wouldn't upload first time they uploaded fine but they also have 99 99 and cannot be changed or deleted except by server again! I tried to change the password of a user in admin everything seems fine, no error but the changes are not saved, same for index page, it will not save changes.
On the home server all files have same owner.
I've had everything deleted again and await your excellent guidance!

Quinn,

what a pity

which hoster are you on?
we have a list of hosters with known problems at the WIKI, maybe it is some of those?
see here: http://get-simple.info/wiki/installation...webhosters

I expect that the hoster's support is capable to provide you with a server environment where such a plain simple application like GetSimple can be installed easily with minimum problems

can you ask them to check again against the installation requirements,
http://get-simple.info/wiki/installation:requirements

Cheers and good luck,

Connie

Thanks for your time Connie
I'm with eUKhost, I have 11 sites with them no other problems, running joomla, wordPress, and simple php and HTML5 sites. I will try again but upload using cpanel which should give user account ownership, then if that still doesn't work I have the option to change the ownership of the site, at the moment ownership is with a root account, but I could give ownership over to this account user, I'd rather not because managing all my sites from one cpanel is far easier!!!!
The server meets all requirements, checked, and on first attempt I checked support - health check and got all green!
I'll let you know WHEN i have success!
