I'm terribly sorry to say that but my computers get so slow in "edit template" source, I lost a couple of letters typed : (
Did you encounter the same problem?
is there a way to make it more responsive?
I'm using GS3.1

Have you tried this plugin?

It might or might not help but it is always worth a try.
Your computer, more specifically your browser or OS getting slow, is a more complicated problem that may not be related to a GS installation server side.

There was a previous discussion about this issue, and lots of suggestions to make the editor optional to disable it.
I don't remember if there was a specific issue causing the lag or not, but it seems like it shouldn't be much of an issue so maybe somethign is indeed wrong with the code optimally.
search the forums for "codemirror"

Current beta/svn version allows disabling codemirror with a gsconfig setting, GSNOHIGHLIGHT
