GetSimple/Backend only capability
#1
Hi everyone. I was searching the forums and could not locate the answer.

I am currently hosting on Dreamhost and they have several free CMS plug-ins but someone directed me to Pulsecms, which I quite liked however would rather not pay. Anyone who is not familiar with Pulse -- it's a simple backend updater. I write my posts and use an embed code onto my site. No themes needed.

I was wondering if that was possible with GetSimple. I have found several website templates that I like and would rather not use a GetSimple theme because if I do that, I might as well figure out the WordPress plug in, you know?

I am planning on having my site be my writing archive and would like comment capabilities as well so is GetSimple the right thing for me for this endeavor? If not, what other suggestions do you have?

Thank you in advance.

I really do not understand you.

If you want milk, you should use milk, if you do not want milk why use the milk bottle ?

Before we start to try to hack GetSimple templates to castrate them from all functionality, do the following please:

there are hundreds of scripts in the wild. YOu can check for "admin template" or "admin page" or similar at www.hotscripts.com for example

It was a simple question in my effort to understand the differences between CMS systems and ease of use. There was no need for rudeness on your part, especially in your role as a moderator. While I thank you for the link and search suggestions, I do hope that you consider how you come off to new posters in the future. If this is GetSimple's philosophy in treating those coming from a completely newbie standpoint, then I really have no desire to use this system.

GetSimple is not like Perch or Pulse where you add an editable region to your website using a php include if this is what you want.

Go here and try out the available Content Management systems. All of them are free.

If you want an article publishing system with comments, you could use Wordpress and just use a free theme.

GetSimple is meant for small & static websites but it is open source and given the appropriate PHP skills, you could turn it into whatever you want it to be.

http://grabaperch.com/ Similar to pulse but not free.

There is no such thing as the ultimate CMS, rather, finding the right one depends on personal preference and finding the right tool to do the job.
Todo arde si le aplicas la chispa adecuada.

No but that would be a neat plugin, remote embedding from a backend getsimple install.
I have hacked togather a few sites like that, to grab in only pieces of a gs site into a static site but its not a standard part of GS.

I originally looked for a static html cms so I could add a cms to my site, when i found GS I realized how powerful it was and that it was totally worth redoing my sites in GS instead.

Although I am still using custom components to auto include some php pages that are not in GS.
( this required some finagling with the include paths due to the fact that including them from components changes the php working path )

for example this code could go in a content-bottom hook or a content filter
Code:
<?php
GLOBAL $inSidebar;

if($inSidebar==true) return;

$includes = array('','maps','places','stats');
$pages = array('','dev_grapher.php','dev_zones.php','dev_resources.php','dev_about.php','dev_stats.php');

$slug = get_page_slug(false);
$pageidx = array_search($slug,$includes);

#echo $slug;
#echo $pageidx;

# _debugLog(get_defined_vars());
if(isset($pageidx) and $pageidx!=''){
  # echo "<pre>including: ".$pages[$pageidx]."</pre>";
  include('../'.$pages[$pageidx]);
}else {
  require_once('../include.php');
}

?>

Basically if you hit up the slug "maps" (must exist ) it will include "dev_grapher.php"

You could use the error-404 hook also and do this without having to create the empty slugs, but then your menu would not have them.
