The proper way is to use an image tag nested inside the link.
The link hrefs to the large image, and you add a special class or rel to it.
So add your image then click it then add the link to the image.
You can right click the image and will have options for editing the link or the image.
You can also do this by selecting the tag you want in the bottom dom path and then click the appropriate icon.
It sounds like instead of changing the image source you deleted it and added it again.
You probably deleted the link as well.
