OK fixed it! It was the ubuntu apache2 install - it had deny on overrides for the www location. I set it to allow ALL and it is now fine! thanks for the help. I had issues because I didnt know in ubu...

it doesnt appear to notice any changes to this htaccess file... any suggestions on what it should say in this redirect section? I have not installed in a sub-directory fyi. thanks in advance
