Hi,
New to GS. I need to have page slug in hebrew. When I tried it the slug was saved as 'temp'. I'm using GS 3.2.1. Do I need some plugins to support this?

which character code is defined in your template?
also: how is the editor defined?
there you can define left to right direction: http://get-simple.info/wiki/how_to:edito..._direction
normally you should not need a plugin, just correct settings

You cannot have utf8 slugs, because we use slug as filenames we strip it for now at least. utf-8 filesystem names are iffy, and we ahve no way to seperate the filename from the url slug as yet.
connies answer has nothing to do with your question.

No one has created a Hebrew transliteration file/plugin for GetSimple (yet).
So you'll have to create it (or get someone to do it), or edit your slugs manually (using just a-z, 0-9 or -)

We really need a clear roadmap for this probably.

For what? Transliteration array is supported since 3.0 (if I remember well), you just need that someone makes that file. I can do it if someone gives me the equivalences between Hebrew-7bit ASCII
'temp' slugs are working ok. At least you don't lose the page as happened in older GS versions.

I can do it, can you give more details please?

I mean do we want to go down the road of transliteration, or seperation of slug/url etc.
There are probably a multitude of options to fix this, prefferably would be one that does not require a special config for each scenario.
In the mean time do we want to maybe add translits to a github repo for sharing ?
Does this help?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO...iterations
http://cldr.unicode.org/index/cldr-spec/...guidelines
Are there prepared transliteration stardard files we can use ?

I created a couple transliteration plugins that can be helpful as examples:
http://get-simple.info/forums/showthread.php?tid=4052
http://www.cyberiada.org/cnb/log/cyrilli...getsimple/
It's quite easy if you know just a bit of php, but if you cannot do it, post or PM me the conversion list of whatever and I'll see what I can do.

If you add support for non-(a-z,0-9,-_) characters in slugs (like gpEasy), it would be better to be something optional. In some languages (like Spanish) that use few of those characters (or are nicely converted) it's usually better to use transliteration.

I just installed a Hebrew transliteration plugin (made from Cyrillic provided by Carlos), this is not what I need .
I need a Hebrew word to appear in the page URL, this is SEO requirement I have.
I'm thinking of something like have an XML file that maps hebrew slugs to whatever temp file names. Update it on save changes, use it when resolving fancy URL.
How do I implement such a thing as a plugin and not a dirty hack?

FYI
https://github.com/jbroadway/urlify
looks helpful
For rewriting the urls, you can try this method with a plugin and hook.
http://get-simple.info/forums/showthread.php?tid=4764
but you would simple load the mapped slug in.

Hey carlos, when we change the slug to temp and use that for filename, we do not store the orig slug anywhere in the page file do we ?

There's no original slug. AFAIR temp is used when a slug cannot be generated (that is, there is not even one transliteratable character in the title)

I think we should find a way to store the utf-8 url, and use a filename for the slug after translit.
It would be as easy as adding the non translit pageid to pages, the slug would be cleaned for filenames, but there would also be another slug used for urls, menus etc.
We could not do this in real time either as it could change with lang switches etc.
This would obviously be confusing also to plugins that don't support it. But it is an idea.
A plugin might even be able to do this with all the new hooks in 3.4
