The default/GS created password .. which i wrote down .. is not letting me login to the admin area. Running on an rpi with an internal fixed IP address. There is an encrypted password in the users directory username.xml file for the correct username but I now need to find a workaround so I can recreate a new password.
The log files are correctly recording the false attempts etc
Any suggestions

You can manually change the encrypted password to a known value, then log in to change it from the admin interface, e.g.:

Thank you very much for your prompt reply ..that approached worked. I did have a go a searching the forum but hadn't found pid 14389. I had thought of that approach but hadn't got to sorting out the encryption that would generate a suitable key. You saved me hours I expect, again thanks :-)
