I put our Linux User special user group site online with GetSimple using the default template.

Oh, Eugene, content of the site is more important, than its look (appearance?). Of course, if presented (shown, this?) website were someone's portfolio or gallery, than -- yes! -- standard design would not be suitable; but website of group, that promoting open-source solutions... I think, at least at the beginning, standard template would be acceptable :-)

Stew, I think you should pay some attention to the images on pages of your website! I think, that some of them are not so attractive as it is necessary :-)

I'd only change links colors to blue, and swap menu hover background from green gradient to blue one, and then everything would present nicely

And I think that standard theme - the best choice for it.
