Protecting Demo Site Designs
#1
Is there a way to protect a demo site from being copied / downloaded?
I am hoping to set up a web design service and would like to have some ready-made sites/themes for sale.
How can i show theme while protecting the code and image files from being used.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated, thanks!

There is no real such way. What is published is published, you cannot protect the sourcecode of webpage

as long as it is HTML it will be copied
but the template-tags are translated, so "Copiers" won't see which template tags you used, how you created the templates

the only way to "protect" a demo-site would be to make screenshots and present these in a slideshow ... but does that make sense?

Did you check how big template portals work? I think you can get some suggestions from there,

unregistered users see screenshots, registered users see working demos ...

Cheers, Connie

I agree with Connie; against someone who wants to steel the markup and now how websites work, there's no real way of protecting markup, css and javascript.

That said; for those who aren't to web-savy, presenting a side inside an iframe can put up somewhat of a barrier. So you create a HTML page, put in a iframe and provide some basic styling for the iframe and finally point the iframe src attribute to the site you want to display. Definitely not a fullproof way, but makes it a bit harder to rip your markup.

Thankyou Connie and Getsimplethemes,
The link was helpful. I take it that a basic html template demo can easily be stolen, and little way of protecting other than an iframe and right-click image blocker. An actual demo theme doesn't show php - which is a good deterent, but still easy to copy html and image files for any web savvy thief!
But then, if someone is that good, maybe they can design and build their own themes / templates in the first place. Those who wish to get stuff for nothing will always find ways, but i know the majority are good law abiding citizens! :-P

Hi,
I agree, that's a very interesting article.

Right-click copying can still be done easily, just be shutting off Javascript in your browser. That said, I do agree that a non-techie person would not be aware of that.

It is really tough to demo themes and not have them pilfered. I suppose one could try various methods of encryption and decryption, but at the risk of over-generalizing, I don't think your typical theme coder has those types of skills. I know I don't.

I'm thinking that one way of providing a value-added benefit of buying would be to provide the PSD's, additional CSS for color variations, modification tips, discount on their next purchase, membership in a support forum, tech support, you get the idea. Because so many things are copyable, not just themes, value-added stuff seems to be the modern way of still making sales these days.

Thanks Flamenco and all for your help.
I just found a few HTML encryption software packages which scramble page code. I think this would certainly protect any demo sites, or at least make a copy-and-past thief's life a little harder. But i wouldn't use it for live websites. Here's a few worth looking at:
Encrypt HTML Pro by MTOPSOFT.
HTML Protector by ANTSSOFT.
And there's a free online encryption tool at: http://developers.evrsoft.com/encrypter.shtml.
I have NO affiliation with the above and i'm not spamming. Just thought i should share these with GS community. Hope that's permissible.
Cheers!

designthing: I was going to mention about encrypting html, but encrypting html to javascript - which is the only working method - is easy to decrypt.

If anyone wants to protect his output code from webdevs there's no unbreakable method.
Addons: getsimple theme, Online Visitors, Notepad

Is true. but must be honest I like ioncube theres really make it hard. (Use Ioncube to encrypt my php code)

http://www.ioncube.com/html_encoder.php

and it converts you html to javascript. But it requires you to have javascript enabled that is okay. but it disables right click, and this I actually require sometimes.

Thought I share. Big Grin

Ha ha !!!
Bonus points for you !! Big Grin
Well that actually makes sense now as the browser has to translate it anyways to understand. Thus view source will look bad but code for browser will look okay.

Well there goes that thought Big Grin At least there php encoder works well to encrypt your php code, even a remote include wont help you there. Big Grin

Thanks Oleg..

Quote:but it disables right click
For anyone looking for a way to prevent Javascript from disabling the context menu in Firefox, go to

OPTIONS -> CONTENT -> ENABLE JAVASCRIPT (ROW) -> (BUTTON) ADVANCED

Tick off the line related to disabling context menu and other stuff you don't want Javascript to control (I don't have an English-language Firefox, so please look around)

Completely crippling the context menu and depriving users of other features there is totally lame and needlessly intrusive.

I tried many different encoders, all they have encoded decoded simply saving pages, iframe too, enough to look into the code and grab the link ... and even have special programs for the simple theft of entire sites, so I recommend to forget about this problem or just to spread pictures/
if the customer requests to protect him from copying text, I usually use a script

There is no way of protecting these things but one of my friend was in same situation last week he designed his website from cambridge web design and protect his site template design to some extent. You can try.

The last posting shows again that this thread is only attracting spam, hoaks and wannabe-signature spammers

so I close this topic
