It gives an error on that line because that’s where it checks for the value of status. The error means that status has not been set at all, so something has gone wrong earlier in the code.
It has nothing (that is, it shouldn’t have anything) to do with the upload problem though.
Have you tried looking for JavaScript errors as mentioned above?
