GS forum software
#1
I have a very good GS website up and running. I would like to add a forum feature to the website - is there a plugin for this? (I searched but did not find anything)

I would like the forum to be as simple as reasonable - it would be nice to have attachments.
I could use an external program and add a link to GS but it would be nice to keep everything together, same theme, tools, admin, and would keep the learning curve down.

Any suggestions?
Thanks,

Have a look on "Vanilla Forums", it's supposed to be a good and modern Forum. But it's using MySQL, so it's gonna complicate the backups (Processing a dump of the database in addition to the classic website files backup).

Thank you for your suggestion. I have script code to write my own blog but anything I write would be a little to simple - I wouldn't want to add attachments and editor.

Everything else I have seen seems to be a little to complex. Mysql is a deal breaker, I would like either text based or Sqlite, because sqlite can be backed up and edited externally. (Ya - I am starting to get picky!!!) I would also prefer something that uses the GS logon and user management.

I understand your concern, and yes having to use a mySQL db is not very enjoyable... But I far as I know, there is no Forum plugin created, and I don't know any good php forum script easy to integrate.

I found these one : https://sourceforge.net/projects/php-forum-1/ and https://sourceforge.net/projects/tinyphpforum/

I have neither the need nor the skill to do anything with that...

Good luck :p

Thanks! I downloaded the second link you gave and will test it. It looks hopeful Smile

UPDATE
Just tried the tinyphpforum and it was close enough to what I wanted. They just did a complete rewrite and it is severely broken. There is no support or way to contact someone for fixes Sad

Cumbe's guestbook in extend allows replies to comments making threaded conversations, so very nearly a simple, single forum. Looks like he has a register and login system on his site too:
http://www.cumbe.es/page-with-users/
http://www.cumbe.es/guestbook/

Angryboy had a working forum plugin but it was still slightly beta and I don't know where you would find the files.

I thought about this solution Timbow, but.. well it's not so good as a real forum. ^^

Hum... and what about a forum working with a SQLite database?

Advantages:
* A lot of different forum software available. (Including the one your're using right now! [MyBB])
* Still easy to backup : a SQLite database save everything inside a unique file. Maybe it's even possible to put this file into the Data folder, so the db will be backup each time your're using the integrated backup GS system.

Disadvantages:
* In comparison of a real big database system like MySQL or PostgreSQL, SQLlite will suffer of performance problems if your forum increase too much. Also you won't be also to manage too much users on the forum at the same time.

These disadvantages also occurs if you are using a php+xml forum!

Thank you for the recommendation.
I tried it and it appears to be incompatible with newer versions of GS. The install instruction are not clear and so there may have been some issues with install. After installing, I went to settings and none of the setup info was there.

Hi,
Thanks for pointing to the SimpleTheme script of Bigin. It made me find the other plugins of Bigin.
His Itemmanager plugin makes the use of GS even more great.
