Just to jump back in on this, only because I now know I'm not alone.
1) I am running on localhost (per my original post).
2) I downloaded the original "Editorial" website template from html5up.net right after having the issue with your GetSimple converted version and found that the original runs like a charm on my Windows localhost. So it does seem that there is indeed something unique in the GetSimple theme that is causing the issues. I just don't know where else to look.
