Unfortunately there is no way to modify meta tags at this time other than editing core files.

Your best option is to write your own function to replace the get_title function in your template.
This way you do not need to modify core files. And can use a plugin like custom fields.

3.4 will have filters for titles and meta tags.

I understand, it is often requested, custom titles.
You should be able to do this with the plugin custom_fields and editing your template.
