You can easily embed vanilla forums in a GS page: http://vanillaforums.org/

Either their hosted version, or your own installed and hosted version.

for this website, I just installed a forum, then used global header/footer files that got included into the forum's templates as well as the GS templates. That way everything looked the same no matter where you were on the site. (I used jQuery to highlight the "current" navigation link)
